Ahmad v. Peel Regional Police Services Board
Simon Bieber, Chris Grisdale, and Robert Stellick act for the family of Ejaz Choudry, a 62-year-old Muslim man who was shot and killed by Peel Regional Police in his home following a mental health call. Our firm successfully defended the open court principle, resisting the police officers' request for a publication ban that would have allowed them to remain anonymous in the lawsuit and in the media. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice denied the officers' motion, calling the request "extraordinary and rare" and concluding that "the evidence that there is a risk of harm is weak and insufficient to justify an exemption to the open court principle."
